Leadership didn't come naturally for me

Truth is, most people, including myself don't naturally want it.

I started this journey more than 15 years ago hitting my first MDRT within just 6 months and kept performing as a consultant there after

To take on leadership would mean that I would have to juggle between my own performance and that of my team

which meant alot more work and no guarantee that I would succeed as a leader

But still I chose this path, became the top performing agency in 2025 in the whole of Infinity FA, leading close to 50 Financial Services Consultants

here's why 👇🏻

"All I could muster was a fake smile to set Dad’s heart at ease

In 2014 - Dad said something that changed everything I believed about Leadership

It was one of the hardest times of my life , weighted down by debt and a broken marriage

I recalled feeling like the whole world had crashed in on me

As you can imagine, avoiding others felt like the best thing to do to keep the pain at bay - But it was impossible to avoid being around parents

I remember vividly sitting at the dining table with Dad right in the middle of that chaos

I did my best to avoid direct eye contact with him and all I could muster was a fake smile to set Dad’s heart at ease.

But Dad knew me well.

When an opportunity came for him to look me dead in the eye

( instead of giving advice or correction )

Dad simply said these three words:

“I trust you.”

Those three words spoke louder and stronger than any sentence he had ever said in the past.

Immediately, tears began to burst out uncontrollably as my heart absorbed the strength of Dad’s unconditional faith in me in the midst of my chaos.

That was when I learned how impactful it can be when leaders lend their confidence at a time when others don’t see it in themselves

So does this approach work in the FA space?

I recalled at one MDRT Conference, not too long ago, an advisor I knew – Eugene Lim, was rejected from purchasing the COT cap when the staff verified his membership. He was only an MDRT qualifier.

I could see the disappointment in his eyes, he wanted that cap as motivation but couldn’t purchase one so I quietly bought it and placed it in his hands right after my own purchase.

Eugene looked at me with a puzzled expression and said, “But Andy… I haven’t made it yet.”

 I smiled and told him:

“This isn’t for who you are today. This is for who you’re becoming.”

Eugene eventually went ahead to achieve his first COT the following year.

In this industry - It is impossible to avoid set-backs but right leadership will always ensure that you do not stay there.

And that's why I chose to be a Leader
